KAB Awards 2015 - 126x127

ILACSD Receives KAB "Affiliate of the Year" Award
Last week, two of our team members, Morgan and Natalie, attended the Keep America Beautiful National Conference in Washington, D.C. Although it was literally freezing, our San Diego natives had an amazing time and returned with THREE first-place awards, including the KAB "Affiliate of the Year" award! There is a total 600 KAB affiliates across the country and it is an honor to be recognized for the environmental work we are doing in San Diego County! Thank you ILACSD supporters for being a part of our success! Read more about their trip and our other two awards in one of our latest blogs here!

Kids' Ocean Day Migrates South this Winter!

After coordinating Kids' Ocean Day in San Diego for over 12 years, ILACSD and the California Coastal Commission are changing things up! For starters, we've moved the event to Imperial Beach to join forces with our friends in Playas de Tijuana. That's right, this year we're creating a bi-national aerial art formation with the message, "Unite por el Mar"/"Unite for the sea!" Our oceans are in trouble and we all need to do our part to protect it - regardless of borders. Read more about this year's event in our blog here! We're also still in need of adult volunteers - those interested in volunteering are encouraged to email Lexi at [email protected]!

Recycling Behind the Scenes: Ramona's HHW Collection Facility

Amanda and Barbara manage our online recycling database,, as well as our hotline, 1-877-237-BLUE. Each day, Monday - Friday, they answer a variety of recycling questions and refer county residents to local facilities to dispose of their items. Recently, however, they realized that neither one of them has actually visited the Ramona HHW collection Facility - a service they recommend daily!

Read more about their trip to the Ramona HHW Collection Facility and how stress-free it is to dispose of HHW that you may have in your home!

Save the Date: Creek to Bay, April 25th

Calling all site captains! Our first countywide cleanup of 2015, Creek to Bay, is just around the corner and we need your support! Although we're still a couple months away, we want to make sure that you have Saturday, April 25th on your radar. All the material and training you need to run a successful cleanup is provided - bags, gloves, water, t-shirts, etc.

Another way to help...get your company involved! You can organize an employee volunteer team and invite family members to join as well. Or, your company can be a financial supporter of Creek to Bay by helping to pay for necessary supplies like water, granola bars, flyers, posters and more! Sponsorship levels range from $1,000 to $15,000 and can be customized to meet your needs. You can even have a member of the ILACSD team come out to your office to provide a lunch and learn type presentation for employees to get them motivated for the big cleanup! For more information, please contact Lexi at [email protected].

Volunteer Spotlight: Jonathan Appelbaum

This month, ILACSD would like to recognize Jonathan Appelbaum in our Volunteer Spotlight! Jonathan has led Creek to Bay and Coastal Cleanup Day efforts in Alpine and he is also active with the SD Audubon Society, SD Canyonlands, and the SD River Park Foundation. When he's not giving back to the community at volunteer events, he works as the lead biologist at the Endangered Habitats Conservancy. You can catch him at our upcoming Kids' Ocean Day event at Border Field State Park on February 26th!

Donor Spotlight: Qualcomm Foundation & the Jack in the Box Foundation!

It was a no-brainer to choose this month's donor spotlight. We would like to recognize the Qualcomm Foundation and the Jack in the Box Foundation for their generous support of Kids' Ocean Day. Each year we bring together nearly 1,000 elementary school students and volunteers to participate in a beach cleanup and a giant aerial art formation to send a message that our oceans need our help. This is no easy feat, and would not be possible without our sponsors. Thank you, Qualcomm and Jack in the Box for showing your support for a healthier and cleaner environment everyone can enjoy!

Are you interested in sponsoring an event? Become a partner for the 13th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup and show your dedication to San Diego's community enhancement! For more information, please visit or email Natalie at [email protected]!
